Tvångssituation is a Swedish term that translates to “coercive situation” or “intimidated situation.” It is used in both legal and psychological contexts to describe circumstances in which an individual experiences pressure, threat, or manipulation that undermines their autonomy or ability to make voluntary decisions. The concept is central to the analysis of consent, especially in the fields of sexual offences, contractual law, and mental health assessment.

In legal terms, a tvångssituation can invalidate the validity of agreements or testimonies if the person’s free will was compromised. Courts evaluate physical threats, psychological intimidation, or economic dependency as factors that may create a coercive environment. The law distinguishes between explicit threats (e.g., a weapon displayed) and subtle pressures (e.g., blackmail or repeated intimidation). For a situation to be considered legally coercive, the pressure must be of a scale that leads the person to act contrary to their will or to avoid refusing the demanded action.
