Tvärstrykning

Tvärstrykning is a Swedish term that translates to "cross-cutting" or "transversal cut" and refers to a specific type of woodworking technique. It involves cutting a piece of wood perpendicular to the direction of the grain. This contrasts with cutting along the grain, which is known as ripping.

The resulting cut surface in tvärstrykning is typically smoother and more prone to splintering than a rip cut. This is because the saw blade severs the wood fibers rather than splitting them. Therefore, care must be taken to avoid tear-out, often by using a sharp blade, a backing board, or by scoring the cut line first.

Tvärstrykning is essential for creating pieces of specific lengths and for joining wood in various ways, such as in mortise and tenon joints or when making cross-laps. The orientation of the grain in tvärstrykning also affects the strength and stability of the wood; pieces cut this way are generally less strong along their length than pieces ripped with the grain.
