Tuulesorteerimine, also known as wind sorting, is a geological process that occurs in desert environments. It involves the movement and deposition of sediment by wind, resulting in the formation of distinct landforms and patterns. Wind sorting is primarily driven by the wind's ability to transport and deposit particles of different sizes and densities.

The process begins when wind picks up loose sediment from the surface. Lighter and smaller particles are more easily lifted and transported, while heavier and larger particles remain in place. As the wind continues to blow, it deposits the lighter particles first, creating a layer of fine sediment. This layer can be several meters thick and is often composed of silt and sand.

Over time, the wind's energy decreases, and it begins to deposit the heavier particles. These particles settle on top of the fine sediment layer, forming a distinct boundary. The result is a stratified deposit with a lower layer of fine sediment and an upper layer of coarser sediment. This process can occur repeatedly, creating multiple layers of fine and coarse sediment.

Wind sorting is responsible for the formation of various landforms, such as sand dunes, loess deposits, and desert pavements. Sand dunes are formed by the accumulation of sand grains blown by the wind, while loess deposits are thick layers of fine sediment that have been blown and deposited over time. Desert pavements are surfaces covered with a layer of coarse sediment, often with a thin layer of fine sediment beneath.

Wind sorting is influenced by several factors, including wind speed and direction, sediment availability, and the topography of the landscape. The process is an important part of the geological cycle and plays a significant role in shaping desert environments.
