Turvapaikanhakemus

Turvapaikanhakemus is the Finnish term for an application for international protection. When a person arrives in Finland and wishes to seek protection from persecution or serious harm in their home country, they can submit a turvapaikanhakemus. This application is then processed by the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri).

The process typically begins with an interview where the applicant can explain the reasons for their fear of returning home. This information, along with any supporting documents, forms the basis of the decision. Finland, like other EU member states, follows the common European asylum system framework.

A turvapaikanhakemus can lead to different outcomes. If the application is approved, the applicant may be granted a residence permit based on protection, either as a refugee or on subsidiary protection grounds. If the application is rejected, the applicant has the right to appeal the decision to an administrative court. Unaccompanied minors are provided with special support and guardians during the application process. The aim is to ensure that all applicants are treated fairly and that decisions are made based on individual circumstances and international obligations.
