Turlough

Turlough is a type of wetland landscape characterized by seasonal flooding, typically found in regions with a temperate climate and flat terrain. The name originates from the Irish word *turlach*, meaning "a place where the water rises," reflecting its defining feature of fluctuating water levels. These ecosystems are common in areas like Ireland, the Netherlands, and parts of Eastern Europe, where they serve as vital habitats for diverse flora and fauna.

Turloughs are classified into two main types: *limestone turloughs* and *sandur turloughs*. Limestone turloughs, found in karst regions, rely on underground limestone aquifers for their water supply, leading to rapid rises and falls in water levels depending on rainfall and seasonal changes. Sandur turloughs, on the other hand, occur in sandy soils and are influenced by surface water drainage. Both types support unique plant communities, including species like the Irish bog cotton and various wetland grasses.
