Turbomoottoreiden, commonly known as turboprop engines, are a type of internal combustion engine that powers an aircraft through thrust generated by a propeller. These engines are a hybrid between a jet engine and a piston engine. The core of a turboprop engine is a gas turbine, similar to that found in a turbojet or turbofan engine. This gas turbine drives a reduction gearbox, which in turn spins the propeller at an optimal speed. A significant portion of the engine's thrust comes from the propeller itself, while the remaining thrust is generated by the exhaust gases from the turbine.

Turboprop engines are known for their efficiency, particularly at lower altitudes and speeds, making them ideal for regional airliners, cargo planes, and military transport aircraft. They offer a good balance between speed and fuel economy compared to pure jet engines for certain operational profiles. The propeller provides excellent takeoff and landing performance, allowing for operation from shorter runways. However, their efficiency decreases at higher altitudes and speeds compared to turbofan engines. The distinct sound of a turboprop aircraft is largely due to the rotating propeller. They are a mature and reliable technology widely used in aviation.
