Tuotantosektori, commonly translated as the production or manufacturing sector, encompasses all activities related to the transformation of raw materials and intermediate goods into finished products suitable for consumption or further production. In Finland, the sector includes sub‑categories such as manufacturing of machinery, electrical equipment, chemicals, food and beverages, as well as the processing of metals, paper, and renewable resources. It typically excludes services that do not involve physical production, such as financial services or retail trade, but may overlap with sectors like construction and utilities when those activities are tied to producing physical goods.

The sector is a core driver of the Finnish economy. According to Statistics Finland, production accounted for roughly 29 % of the country’s gross domestic product in 2022, and employed about 20 % of the labor force. It also supports a wide network of suppliers, distributors, and research institutions, thereby generating indirect employment and fostering technological spillover. Internationally, Finland’s manufacturing strengths lie in high‑value engineering, telecommunications, and sustainable forestry products, which together contribute to the country’s export earnings.

Key challenges for the tuotantosektori include rising input costs, a global shift towards circular economy practices, and the need to accelerate digital integration through Industry 4.0 technologies. In response, government initiatives focus on skills development, research and development subsidies, and support for small and medium‑sized enterprises to enhance competitive resilience. The sector’s evolution continues to shape Finland’s industrial identity and its integration into global supply chains.
