Tulivuoririvistöjä, or volcanic arcs, are linear chains of volcanoes that form along the boundaries of tectonic plates. These arcs are typically found where one oceanic plate subducts beneath another plate, either oceanic or continental. The subduction process generates magma, which rises to the surface and forms volcanoes. The most well-known examples of volcanic arcs include the Andes in South America, the Cascade Range in North America, and the Japanese archipelago.

Oceanic arcs form when one oceanic plate subducts beneath another oceanic plate, while continental arcs form when an oceanic plate subducts beneath a continental plate. The magma produced in oceanic arcs is typically more mafic (rich in magnesium and iron) and tends to be more explosive, while the magma in continental arcs is more felsic (rich in silica) and tends to be more viscous and explosive.

Volcanic arcs are not only important for their geological significance but also for their economic and environmental impacts. They are often associated with mineral deposits, such as gold, copper, and oil, and can also cause significant hazards, including volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tsunamis. Additionally, volcanic arcs can support unique ecosystems, including those found in the deep-sea hydrothermal vents associated with some arcs.
