Tuftatut

Tuftatut is a descriptive botanical term used to denote a tuft-like growth form found in a variety of organisms, including flowering plants, mosses, and lichens. It describes dense, compact clusters of shoots or thalli that form a cushion- or ball-shaped mass and that can be distinguished from single-pointed rosettes by their broader, more uniform clump.

In vascular plants, tuftatut manifests as dense clumps of short, vertical or prostrate shoots with leaves that are often reduced in size. In bryophytes or lichens, it refers to a dense, hairy or filamentous tuft that gives the surface a fuzzy appearance. The habit can improve survival in exposed or dry habitats by reducing water loss and protecting meristems or growing points.
