TränenwegOperationen, also known as dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR), are surgical procedures designed to bypass an obstruction in the tear drainage system. This blockage prevents tears from draining properly from the eye into the nose, leading to symptoms such as excessive tearing (epiphora), recurrent eye infections, and inflammation of the tear sac. The primary goal of TränenwegOperationen is to re-establish a functional pathway for tear drainage.

There are several approaches to performing a TränenwegOperation. The external approach involves a small incision on the side of the nose to create a new opening between the tear sac and the nasal cavity. This method is often preferred for its effectiveness. An internal approach, known as endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy, is performed through the nostril using an endoscope, avoiding any external scarring. This minimally invasive technique is becoming increasingly popular.

The procedure is typically performed under local or general anesthesia. During the surgery, the surgeon will open the lacrimal sac and create a connection with the nasal mucosa, often implanting a small silicone tube (stent) to keep the new passage open during the healing process. This stent is usually removed after a few months.

Post-operative care involves managing pain, preventing infection, and keeping the nasal passages clean.
