TränenfilmBreakUp refers to a phenomenon related to the tear film that covers the surface of the eye. The tear film is a complex fluid composed of three layers: lipid, aqueous, and mucin. This film plays a crucial role in maintaining ocular health and clear vision by lubricating the eye, clearing debris, and providing a smooth surface for light refraction.

A "breakup" of the tear film, often referred to as Tear Film Breakup Time (TBUT), is a measure of how long the tear film remains stable on the cornea before a dry spot forms. A normal TBUT is generally considered to be 10 seconds or longer. If the tear film breaks up prematurely, it can lead to symptoms associated with dry eye disease.

Factors that can influence tear film stability and lead to premature breakup include environmental conditions such as low humidity or wind, prolonged screen time which reduces blinking frequency, certain medical conditions like Sjögren's syndrome, and the use of specific medications. The lipid layer, produced by the meibomian glands, is particularly important for preventing rapid evaporation of the aqueous layer. Dysfunction of these glands, known as meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), is a common cause of tear film instability and dry eye.

Assessing TBUT is a standard diagnostic test performed by eye care professionals to help identify and manage dry eye disease. A reduced TBUT can indicate that the ocular surface is not adequately protected, potentially leading to discomfort, irritation, and blurred vision.
