Troponiinitropomyoosiinikompleksi, often referred to as the troponin complex, is a vital regulatory protein found in striated muscle, playing a crucial role in muscle contraction. This complex is composed of three distinct subunits, each with a specific function. Troponin I (TnI) is the inhibitory subunit, responsible for binding to actin and preventing the interaction between actin and myosin in a relaxed muscle state. Troponin T (TnT) is the tropomyosin-binding subunit, anchoring the troponin complex to tropomyosin, a long, filamentous protein that also encircles actin. Finally, troponin C (TnC) is the calcium-binding subunit.

The process of muscle contraction is initiated by the influx of calcium ions (Ca2+) into the muscle cell. These calcium ions bind to troponin C. This binding causes a conformational change within the troponin complex. This change in shape is then transmitted to troponin I, which releases its inhibitory grip on actin. Simultaneously, the entire troponin complex shifts its position along the actin filament, moving tropomyosin away. This movement exposes the myosin-binding sites on actin. Once these sites are exposed, myosin heads can bind to actin, initiating the power stroke that leads to muscle contraction. When calcium levels decrease, calcium dissociates from troponin C, and the troponin complex returns to its original conformation, re-inhibiting actin and allowing the muscle to relax. The precise structure and function of the troponin complex are fundamental to understanding skeletal and cardiac muscle physiology.
