Trombocytakoncentrátumok, also known as platelet concentrates, are a blood product used in medicine to treat or prevent bleeding in patients with low platelet counts. Platelets are small, disc-shaped cells in the blood that play a crucial role in hemostasis, the process of stopping bleeding. When a blood vessel is injured, platelets aggregate at the site of injury and form a plug, which is then reinforced by fibrin to create a stable clot.

Low platelet counts, a condition called thrombocytopenia, can arise from various causes, including certain cancers, chemotherapy, bone marrow disorders, and autoimmune diseases. Patients with severe thrombocytopenia are at increased risk of spontaneous bleeding, which can be life-threatening.

Trombocytakoncentrátumok are prepared from donated whole blood. After collection, the blood is centrifuged to separate its components. Platelets, being less dense than red blood cells and plasma, are concentrated in the upper layers. These platelet-rich components are then collected and processed into a therapeutic product. They can be derived from a single donor (single-donor apheresis) or pooled from multiple donors (whole-blood-derived).

The administration of trombocytakoncentrátumok is typically done intravenously. The goal is to raise the patient's platelet count to a level sufficient to prevent or control bleeding. The efficacy and duration of the effect depend on the underlying cause of thrombocytopenia and the patient's individual response. Regular monitoring of platelet counts is essential during treatment. While generally safe, potential risks associated with platelet transfusions include allergic reactions, fever, and the transmission of infections, although rigorous screening of donors minimizes this risk.
