Trogulidae

Trogulidae is a family of small, subterranean mammals belonging to the order Soricomorpha, which also includes shrews and moles. They are native to the Mediterranean region, with the majority of species found in the Iberian Peninsula. Trogulids are characterized by their small size, typically ranging from 5 to 10 centimeters in length, and their burrowing habits. They have a streamlined body, short limbs, and a long, pointed snout, which is well-adapted for digging and foraging in underground environments.

The family Trogulidae consists of two genera: Trogulus and Talpa. The genus Trogulus includes the species Trogulus ochrus and Trogulus canariensis, while the genus Talpa includes the species Talpa caeca and Talpa europaea. Trogulids are primarily insectivorous, feeding on a variety of invertebrates found in their subterranean habitats. They are solitary animals, except during the breeding season, and are known to be territorial.

Trogulids play an important role in their ecosystems by controlling insect populations and recycling nutrients through their burrowing activities. However, they are also threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation due to human activities such as agriculture and urban development. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these unique subterranean mammals and their habitats.
