The triceps brachii muscle, commonly known as the triceps, is a large muscle located on the posterior side of the upper limb of many vertebrate animals. It is the muscle largely responsible for extending the elbow joint. The name "triceps" is a Latin word meaning "three-headed," referring to the three distinct parts or heads of the muscle. These heads are the long head, the lateral head, and the medial head.

The long head originates from the infraglenoid tubercle of the scapula, the lateral head originates from the posterior surface of the humerus superior to the radial groove, and the medial head originates from the posterior surface of the humerus inferior to the radial groove. All three heads converge and insert onto the olecranon process of the ulna.

The primary function of the triceps is to extend the forearm at the elbow. This action is crucial for pushing movements, such as pushing a door open, performing push-ups, or throwing a ball. The long head also assists in extending and adducting the arm at the shoulder joint, although this role is less significant than its elbow extension function.

Weakness or injury to the triceps can impair the ability to straighten the arm, affecting everyday activities and athletic performance. Triceps muscles are often targeted in strength training exercises to improve upper body power and definition.
