Triplequoted

Triplequoted refers to string literals delimited by three quotation marks. In languages that support them, such as Python, a triple-quoted string can span multiple lines and include characters that would require escaping in single-line literals. The two common forms are """...""" and '''...'''. In Python, these literals serve as standard string values and are also used for docstrings when placed at the start of a module, class, or function.

Unlike comments, triple-quoted strings are real string objects that exist at runtime. When used as a docstring, the interpreter stores the string in the object's __doc__ attribute and documentation tools can extract it.

Triple-quoted strings support raw and formatted variants: r"""...""" preserves backslashes without interpreting them; f"""...""" enables expression interpolation inside the string; and combinations like f"""...{expr}...""" are also valid. However, escapes are processed unless the string is raw.

Conventions: many Python style guides recommend using triple double quotes for docstrings, and triple quotes can simplify inclusion of quotes inside the string, avoiding the need to escape them. Indentation within a multi-line triple-quoted string is preserved, so developers often adjust indentation to produce the intended text or use textwrap.dedent when needed.

Other languages, such as Kotlin, offer similar raw-string syntax using triple quotes, but the term triplequoted is most closely associated with Python's string literals. The concept remains a generic way to denote a multi-line string delimiter across languages that support it.
