Trimethylborane

Trimethylborane, (CH3)3B, is an organoboron compound consisting of a boron atom bonded to three methyl groups. The boron center is electron-deficient, giving the molecule Lewis acidic character and a tendency toward rapid reactions with nucleophiles or bases. In the absence of strong donors, the boron is typically described as trigonal and planar.

The compound is colorless and highly volatile, and it is both pyrophoric and moisture sensitive. It readily ignites in air and is normally handled under inert atmosphere or in specialized apparatus. Upon contact with water, it hydrolyzes to boric acid and alkanes (methyl groups), for example producing methane. Due to its reactivity and volatility, it is stored and transported under strictly controlled, dry conditions and away from oxidants and ignition sources.

Applications and uses include acting as a volatile boron source in organic synthesis and serving as a precursor for boron-containing films in chemical vapor deposition. It can behave as a Lewis acid to activate substrates and to generate organoborane intermediates, which are useful in hydroboration-type transformations when used in situ or in carefully controlled reactions. In materials science, trimethylborane is employed as a reagent for depositing boron-containing coatings and films, contributing to the preparation of boron carbide or boron nitride layers in some deposition processes.

Safety and handling considerations emphasize its pyrophoric and air/moisture sensitivity. It is stored under inert gas, used with appropriate flame and ignition control, and handled in a well-ventilated area with proper protective equipment. In case of exposure or exposure to moisture, procedures for quenching and disposal should follow established laboratory safety protocols.
