Triestes

Triestes is a name occasionally used to refer to the Italian city of Trieste in northeastern Italy, especially in historical texts and some languages. It sits on the Adriatic coast at the head of the Gulf of Trieste, near the border with Slovenia.

Trieste functions as the capital of the autonomous region Friuli-Venezia Giulia and hosts one of Italy's major ports on the Adriatic. The city lies at the crossroads of Latin, Slavic, and Germanic cultural influences, and its historic core blends Austro-Hungarian architecture with Italian urban design. The metropolitan area centers on Piazza Unità d'Italia, the waterfront, and a hillside old town containing San Giusto Castle and Gothic- and Baroque-era churches. Miramare Castle, an 1860s residence of Emperor Maximilian, stands along the coast nearby. The city hosts the University of Trieste and the international physics research center ICTP.

Historically, Trieste was founded as the Roman city of Tergeste. It later became a key port of the Habsburg Empire from the 18th century and, after World War I, joined Italy. During World War II it changed hands amid competing claims by Italy and Yugoslavia. From 1947 to 1954 the area was part of the Free Territory of Trieste, administered by the Allies; in 1954 the London Memorandum assigned Trieste and its port to Italy, with surrounding areas allocated to Yugoslavia. The city remains a significant commercial and cultural hub in the region.
