Trichilemmocytes

Trichilemmocytes are a type of cell found in the hair follicle of mammals, including humans. These cells are specifically located in the outer root sheath of the hair follicle and play a critical role in the development and maintenance of hair. Trichilemmocytes are derived from the basal cells of the outer root sheath and are characterized by their ability to produce a hard, keratinized layer that surrounds the hair shaft.

The primary function of trichilemmocytes is to secrete the protein keratin, which is secreted into the center of the hair follicle and then compacted into a hard, protein-based layer. This layer is essential for protecting the hair shaft and preventing it from damage or water loss. Trichilemmocytes are able to produce this layer through a process called keratinization, in which they undergo a series of biochemical and structural changes that allow them to produce keratin.

Abnormalities in trichilemmocytes have been associated with several diseases, including trichilemmoma, a rare skin condition that results from the growth of benign tumor cells that produce excessive keratin. Understanding the function and behavior of trichilemmocytes has important implications for the diagnosis and treatment of hair and skin disorders.
