Tributylarsine

Tributylarsine is an organoarsenic compound with the chemical formula (C4H9)3As. It is a colorless liquid with a strong, unpleasant odor. Tributylarsine is soluble in organic solvents but poorly soluble in water. It is classified as a toxic substance and is an irritant.

The synthesis of tributylarsine typically involves the reaction of arsenic trichloride with butylmagnesium bromide, a Grignard reagent. This reaction produces the tributylarsine along with magnesium bromide and chloride.

Due to its toxicity, tributylarsine has limited practical applications. Historically, some organoarsenic compounds have been explored for medicinal purposes, but tributylarsine itself is not used as a pharmaceutical. Its primary relevance is in chemical research, particularly in studies involving organometallic chemistry and as a ligand in coordination chemistry. It can coordinate to metal centers, influencing their electronic and steric properties.

In terms of safety, tributylarsine should be handled with extreme caution in a well-ventilated area, preferably a fume hood. Appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves and eye protection, is essential. Exposure can occur through inhalation, skin absorption, or ingestion, and can lead to symptoms of arsenic poisoning.
