These areas are defined by hydrological boundaries where surface runoff, groundwater discharge, and rainfall converge to feed the primary watercourse. The concept is important for water resource management, ecological conservation, and land-use planning.

In Finland, tributaarialueet are delineated by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) and the Ministry of the Environment. The delineation process involves mapping watershed boundaries using topographic data, assessing land cover, and analyzing flow direction. Each tributary area has a unique catchment area size, which determines the volume of water it contributes, sediment load, and potential pollutant transport to the main river.
