Tribosähköistyksellä, also known as triboelectric charging, is a phenomenon where certain materials become electrically charged after they come into contact with another material and then separate. This transfer of charge occurs because different materials have different affinities for electrons. When two dissimilar materials are rubbed or brought into close contact and then pulled apart, electrons can be transferred from one material to the other. The material that loses electrons becomes positively charged, while the material that gains electrons becomes negatively charged.

The magnitude and polarity of the charge generated depend on the specific materials involved. This relationship can often be visualized using the triboelectric series, which ranks materials based on their tendency to gain or lose electrons. Materials higher on the series tend to lose electrons and become positive, while materials lower on the series tend to gain electrons and become negative. The amount of friction or contact time also influences the extent of charging.

Tribosähköistyksellä is a common occurrence and can be observed in everyday situations, such as when you shuffle your feet across a carpet and then touch a metal object, or when balloons stick to a wall after being rubbed on hair. This effect has practical applications in various fields, including electrostatic precipitators used to remove particles from air, and in the development of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) which can convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. However, it can also be a nuisance, causing static electricity that can damage sensitive electronic components or create unwanted sparks.
