Tribopair refers to a pair of contacting bodies that form the functional interface in a tribological system. The term emphasizes the two-part nature of the interacting surfaces or components whose relative motion produces friction, wear, and, in some contexts, charge or energy transfer.

Practically, tribopairs are characterized by the material combination, surface finish, hardness, coatings, lubrication regime, and operating environment. Material pairs range from metals to ceramics, polymers, and composites, and performance depends on matching hardness, roughness, chemistry, and compatibility with lubricants. Surface treatments such as hard coatings, texturing, or coatings influence friction and wear, while lubrication shifts the regime from boundary to hydrodynamic or elastohydrodynamic behavior.

Key properties include the coefficient of friction and wear rate, as well as durability and heat generation under load. Tribological testing uses standardized configurations such as pin-on-disk or ball-on-flat to quantify friction, wear, and temperature rise at the interface. In energy harvesting, certain tribopairs are used in triboelectric nanogenerators to convert mechanical motion into electricity, exploiting charge generation at contacting surfaces.
