This practice often serves as a form of rebellion against mainstream trends, nostalgia, or a critique of contemporary culture.

The concept gained prominence in Finland during the late 2010s and early 2020s, particularly among younger generations. Trendikkäät can manifest in various forms, such as reviving vintage fashion, embracing clichéd internet memes, or adopting exaggerated, over-the-top versions of past trends. It reflects a broader global trend of anti-consumerism and irony in fashion and digital culture, where authenticity and originality are sometimes intentionally subverted.
