Trebalo

Trebalo is a neuter participle form of the South Slavic verb trebati, meaning to need or to be necessary. It is used in Croatian, Bosnian, and Serbian to express necessity, obligation, or expectation, often in impersonal constructions. The form is typically neuter in impersonal use, but it has gendered variants (trebao, trebala, trebalo) when the subject is explicitly stated.

In its main function, trebalo expresses that something was or is necessary. It commonly appears with a dative pronoun to indicate who needs something, as in trebalo mi je vremena meaning “I needed time” or “it took me time.” It can also introduce a clause with da to convey that something should or was supposed to happen, such as trebalo bi da ostaneš meaning “you should stay” and trébalo bi da završimo meaning “we should finish.”

Grammatical forms include the neuter trebalo for impersonal uses, and the gendered participles—trebao (masculine), trebala (feminine)—when the subject is specified, e.g., Trebao sam ostati (I was supposed to stay), Trebala sam doći (I was supposed to come). These forms align with the broader conjugation of trebati and reflect tense and aspect through auxiliary verbs or modal particles like bi in present or past expressions.

Beyond its core meaning, trebalo also appears in fixed expressions and varies slightly by dialect.
