The pathway begins with the transfer of sulfur from homocysteine to serine, catalyzed by the enzyme cystathionine beta-synthase. This reaction forms cystathionine. Subsequently, cystathionine is cleaved by the enzyme cystathionine gamma-lyase, yielding cysteine and alpha-ketobutyrate.
