Transportjelenségek, often translated as transport phenomena, are a group of related physical processes that involve the transfer of matter, energy, or momentum. These phenomena are fundamental to many scientific and engineering disciplines, including physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, and mechanical engineering. The key characteristic of transport phenomena is that they describe the movement of some quantity from one point to another due to a driving force.

The three primary categories of transport phenomena are mass transfer, momentum transfer, and energy transfer. Mass transfer deals with the movement of chemical species from regions of higher concentration to regions of lower concentration, driven by a concentration gradient. Examples include diffusion and convection. Momentum transfer, also known as fluid mechanics, concerns the transfer of momentum within a fluid, leading to phenomena like viscosity and turbulence. This movement is driven by gradients in velocity. Energy transfer, or heat transfer, describes the movement of thermal energy from hotter regions to colder regions, driven by a temperature gradient. Common examples are conduction, convection, and radiation.

Understanding transport phenomena is crucial for designing and optimizing a wide range of systems and processes. This includes everything from chemical reactors and heat exchangers to biological systems like blood flow and nutrient transport within cells. The mathematical descriptions of these phenomena often employ differential equations, such as Fick's laws for mass transfer, Newton's law of viscosity for momentum transfer, and Fourier's law for heat transfer. These laws, combined with appropriate boundary conditions, allow for the prediction and analysis of transport processes.
