Transkriptionssystemen, or transcription systems, are methods used to represent spoken language in written form. These systems are crucial for various fields, including linguistics, language learning, research, and accessibility. They aim to accurately capture the sounds of speech, often going beyond standard orthography to represent finer phonetic details.

There are broadly two main types of transcription systems: phonetic and phonemic. Phonetic transcription aims to represent all perceived sounds in speech, including variations and nuances. This is often achieved using specialized symbols, such as those found in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The IPA is a widely adopted standard that provides a unique symbol for each distinct sound, allowing for precise and unambiguous representation of pronunciation. Phonemic transcription, on the other hand, focuses on the distinctive sound units of a particular language, known as phonemes. These systems represent sounds that can change the meaning of a word. For instance, the difference between "pat" and "bat" in English is phonemic, represented by different phonemic symbols.

Different transcription systems exist for different purposes and languages. Some systems are designed for broad transcription, capturing only the most significant sound distinctions, while others are for narrow transcription, detailing subtle phonetic variations like aspiration or nasalization. The choice of system depends on the research question or the intended use of the transcription. Accurately applied transcription systems are essential tools for analyzing language, documenting endangered languages, and developing speech technologies.
