Transactionally

Transactionally is an adverb derived from transactional, used to describe performing an action within the scope of a transaction or in a manner consistent with transactional properties. In computing and databases, actions executed transactionally are grouped into a single logical unit of work that must be completed entirely or not at all. This ensures atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability—the ACID properties. If any step within the transaction fails, the system typically rolls back to the state before the transaction began, and no partial changes are committed.

In practice, transactionally executing a set of operations may involve a database transaction, a multi-step update across tables, or interactions across services in a distributed system. When operations span multiple services, patterns such as two-phase commit or sagas may be used to preserve transactional guarantees or compensate for failures, respectively. Developers aim to design APIs and workflows that can be executed transactionally to prevent data inconsistencies and race conditions.

Common concerns when doing things transactionally include performance overhead from locking, reduced concurrency due to isolation levels, and the risk of long-lived transactions. Appropriate use of transaction boundaries, idempotent operations, and clear rollback semantics are important. Overall, describing an action as being done transactionally signals that it adheres to the principles of transactional integrity, either within a single system or across distributed components.
