Tractography is a medical imaging technique used to map the white matter pathways of the brain. There are several methods for performing tractography, including deterministic, probabilistic, and machine learning-based approaches. Deterministic tractography follows a single path through the diffusion tensor field, assuming a single fiber orientation at each voxel. Probabilistic tractography, on the other hand, considers multiple possible paths, providing a more comprehensive representation of fiber tracts. Machine learning-based methods, such as deep learning, are increasingly being used to improve the accuracy and efficiency of tractography.

Tractography has numerous applications in both research and clinical settings. In research, it is used to study the normal and abnormal connectivity of the brain, contributing to our understanding of brain function and dysfunction. Clinically, tractography is employed to assess the integrity of white matter pathways in patients with neurological disorders, such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, and traumatic brain injury. Despite its advantages, tractography has limitations. The accuracy of tractography depends on the quality of the DW-MRI data and the assumptions made during the reconstruction process. Factors such as partial volume averaging, crossing fibers, and noise can affect the results. Ongoing research aims to address these challenges and improve the reliability and precision of tractography.
