Trackingdetektorer are sensor assemblies designed to determine the trajectories of moving particles by recording their positions at multiple points along a path. They are a central component in experimental physics, enabling the reconstruction of particle tracks, measurements of momentum in magnetic fields, and the localization of interaction or decay vertices. They are used in high-energy physics, space experiments, and certain medical and security applications.

Operation relies on layers of sensitive material that produce detectable signals when traversed by charged particles. By combining the spatial coordinates from many layers, a track is reconstructed using pattern recognition and fitting algorithms, often employing Kalman filtering. In a magnetic field, the curvature of a track yields the particle’s momentum, while the track’s origin helps identify the event’s vertex and the sequence of decays.

Common types include silicon pixel detectors, silicon strip detectors, and gaseous trackers such as drift chambers and time projection chambers. More advanced devices encompass micro-pattern gas detectors like MICROMEGAS and GEM-based trackers, as well as scintillating-fiber or scintillator-based systems. The choice of technology balances spatial resolution, material budget, radiation hardness, and readout speed.

Applications span major collider experiments—such as silicon trackers in ATLAS and CMS at the Large Hadron Collider—and specialized detectors in other physics programs. Tracking detectors also appear in space missions and certain medical physics setups for imaging and beam monitoring. Challenges include radiation damage, precise alignment, detector aging, and the computational load of track reconstruction, all of which drive ongoing development in sensor design and data processing.
