TpmReady

TpmReady is a term used in computer security to indicate that a device’s Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is present, initialized, and available for use by the operating system and security features. It represents a readiness state reported by firmware, system management software, or the operating system when the TPM is properly provisioned and able to perform cryptographic operations.

Provisioning and readiness are achieved through a sequence that may include enabling the TPM in firmware, clearing or taking ownership, and configuring it for use. Provisioning typically involves creating or provisioning keys, establishing a TPM owner, and setting security policies. A TPM that is not owned or not provisioned is not considered ready for security functions.

A ready TPM enables hardware-backed security features. It can be used to store and protect cryptographic keys, support disk encryption such as BitLocker, protect credentials used by Windows Hello, and enable attestation to verify the integrity of software and firmware measurements. Readiness is therefore a prerequisite for many security ecosystems that rely on hardware roots of trust.

Readiness can vary by TPM version and platform. TPM 1.2 and TPM 2.0 differ in capabilities, and firmware implementations may expose a boolean readiness indicator to the OS or management tools. In enterprise environments, IT policies and provisioning workflows may explicitly require TPM readiness as part of device configuration and compliance checks.
