Toponymor

Toponymor is a term used in some linguistic discussions to denote a unit of form or meaning that participates in the creation of a toponym, i.e., a place name. It refers to a morpheme, affix, or combining element that is productive in forming geographic names and that carries a semantic cue related to location, feature, or settlement type. The concept is not widely standardized, and the term does not appear in most dictionaries or typologies of toponymy.

Etymology and scope: the word blends top- (place) with onym (name) and -mor or morpheme, signaling a focus on the small, meaningful pieces that contribute to toponyms. A toponymor can be a root, suffix, prefix, or compound element that repeatedly appears across languages in the naming of places. It is distinct from the broader concept of a toponym (the place name itself) and from a toponymist (the researcher who studies place names).

Function and usage: in onomastic research, toponymors are considered when examining patterns in how regions encode geography, culture, or history within names. For example, the suffix -grad in Slavic toponyms or -ville in English- and French-language names can be treated as toponymors signaling settlement type or cognitive image. Because the term is not standard, scholars often prefer precise descriptors such as “toponym-forming morpheme” or “geographic morpheme.”
