Toponeme
Toponeme is the smallest meaningful element of a place name, a unit of semantic content embedded in a toponym, which is the proper name of a geographic place. In toponymy, the toponeme denotes a function or feature such as a river crossing, a settlement type, a landscape feature, or a historical function. The full place name is formed from one or more toponemes plus additional morphemes, and its interpretation often requires knowledge of historical languages and local history. Studying toponemes helps scholars reconstruct past landscapes, migrations, and linguistic contact, and shows how place names reflect cultural and political histories.
Common toponemes include: ford, indicating a river crossing; -by or -by meaning village in Norse-derived toponyms
Toponymic analysis considers how the same toponeme appears in related languages and how sound changes produce
