Tootmiskulu

Tootmiskulu is a term used in Estonian business and accounting to denote the total cost of producing goods or services during a given period or for a specific production run. It is a core concept in cost accounting and managerial decision making, bridging budgeting, pricing, and financial reporting.

The production cost typically comprises fixed costs and variable costs. Fixed costs include items such as rent, salaries of permanent staff, and depreciation that do not change with output in the short run. Variable costs include direct materials, direct labor, and energy that rise with production volume. Semi-variable costs contain both elements.

Calculation and unit cost: Total production cost = fixed costs + variable costs. Unit production cost = total production cost divided by units produced. When output grows, unit cost may decline as fixed costs are spread over more units; when output falls, unit cost can rise. In many businesses the term is used for a specific period or batch.

Accounting treatment and methods: In absorption costing, fixed overhead is allocated to products, while variable costing assigns only variable costs to units and treats fixed overhead as a period expense. Production costs influence inventory valuation (work in progress and finished goods) and cost of goods sold in financial statements, and they inform pricing and budgeting decisions.
