Tonometrybased

Tonometrybased refers to any measurement or diagnostic procedure that relies on the principle of tonometry. Tonometry itself is a medical examination used to measure the intraocular pressure (IOP), which is the fluid pressure inside the eye. Elevated IOP is a primary risk factor for developing glaucoma, a serious condition that can lead to irreversible vision loss.

Tonometrybased assessments are crucial for the early detection and monitoring of glaucoma. Different methods exist to perform tonometry, each with its own advantages and applications. These include Goldmann applanation tonometry, which is considered the gold standard, as well as non-contact tonometry (air-puff tonometry) and rebound tonometry.

The results from a tonometrybased examination help ophthalmologists and optometrists determine if a patient's IOP is within a normal range, or if it is elevated. This information, combined with other diagnostic tests such as visual field testing and optical coherence tomography (OCT), allows for a comprehensive evaluation of eye health and the diagnosis of various ocular conditions, most notably glaucoma. Regular tonometrybased examinations are recommended, especially for individuals with risk factors for glaucoma, such as a family history, advanced age, or certain medical conditions.
