Tomografisk

Tomografisk is the adjective form used in several Scandinavian languages to describe anything related to tomography. It denotes techniques, devices or results that involve the reconstruction of images from projection data to form cross-sectional views. The term derives from the Greek tomos, meaning slice, and graphein, meaning to write.

Tomography reconstructs cross-sectional images from many projections captured around an object or patient. It is widely used in medicine to visualize internal structures, and it is also employed in geophysics, materials science, and nondestructive testing.

Common tomographic modalities include X-ray computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography combined with CT (PET/CT) or SPECT/CT, and optical or ultrasound tomography. Each modality uses different physical signals to probe internal structure, but all share the goal of producing slice-like images of a subject.

Data acquisition involves collecting projection measurements from multiple angles. Reconstruction methods include filtered back projection and iterative reconstruction, which can incorporate prior information and physics models to improve image quality.

Tomographic imaging balances resolution, contrast, and radiation exposure in medical contexts. Advances include low-dose CT, dual-energy CT, and functional tomography that visualizes biochemical processes in addition to anatomy.

The term is used in technical documentation and clinical reports, often paired with the specific modality (for example, tomografisk CT). In English, the equivalent is tomographic. In Scandinavian contexts, tomografisk appears in manuals, guidelines, and scholarly articles.
