Tollbooths

A tollbooth is a structure on a toll road, bridge, or tunnel where tolls are collected from road users. This collection system is a form of user charge, intended to fund the construction, maintenance, and operation of the infrastructure. Tollbooths can take various forms, from simple unmanned payment machines to elaborate facilities with multiple lanes and staffed collection points.

Historically, tollbooths were manned stations where drivers would stop to pay a fee, often in cash, to an attendant. This method, while functional, could lead to significant traffic congestion due to the need for vehicles to halt. In response to these inefficiencies, automated toll collection systems were developed. These systems utilize various technologies, such as transponders that communicate wirelessly with readers at the tollbooth, or cameras that capture license plate information for later billing.

Modern toll collection often aims to minimize or eliminate the need for vehicles to stop completely. This is achieved through electronic toll collection (ETC) systems, also known as transponder-based systems or automated payment systems. Vehicles equipped with a transponder pass through designated lanes, and the toll is automatically deducted from a prepaid account or billed to the registered owner. This significantly speeds up traffic flow and reduces operational costs. In some locations, manual toll collection has been entirely replaced by these electronic methods.
