When a subsidiary or a foreign branch operates in a country with a different currency than its parent company, the determination of the functional currency is crucial for consolidation. If the subsidiary's functional currency is the same as the parent's reporting currency, then its financial statements are translated using the current rate method. However, if the functional currency differs from the reporting currency, a more complex translation process is required.

Identifying the functional currency involves considering several factors. These include the currency that mainly influences sales prices, the currency of the country whose competitive forces and regulations primarily determine the selling prices, and the currency that mainly influences labor, material, and other costs of providing goods or services. The currency in which funds are generated from the entity's operations and the currency in which cash flows are primarily attributable to the ongoing operations are also important considerations.
