Toiduvärvil, often translated as food coloring or food dye, refers to any substance that imparts color to food or drink. These substances are used to enhance the visual appeal of food, making it more attractive to consumers. They can be derived from natural sources or be synthetic in origin.

Natural food colorings are extracted from plants, animals, or minerals. Examples include carotenoids from carrots, anthocyanins from berries, and turmeric from the turmeric root. These colorings are generally perceived as safer and are often preferred in products marketed as "natural."

Synthetic food colorings, on the other hand, are manufactured chemically. They often offer more vibrant and stable colors and are more cost-effective. Common synthetic food colorings include tartrazine (yellow 5), sunset yellow (yellow 6), and allura red (red 40). Regulatory bodies in different countries approve specific synthetic colorings and set limits on their usage.

The use of toiduvärvil is regulated to ensure consumer safety. In many regions, food products containing artificial colorings are required to be labeled accordingly. Concerns have been raised about the potential health effects of certain synthetic food colorings, particularly in children, leading to ongoing research and debates about their safety and regulation.
