Toernooiselectie, also known as tournament selection, is a method used in evolutionary algorithms and genetic programming to select individuals for reproduction. This process is crucial for the evolution of a population towards better solutions. Tournament selection works by randomly choosing a subset of individuals from the population and then selecting the best individual from this subset to participate in reproduction. The size of the subset, known as the tournament size, is a parameter that can be adjusted. A larger tournament size increases the pressure for selection, potentially leading to faster convergence but also a higher risk of premature convergence, where the algorithm gets stuck in a local optimum. Conversely, a smaller tournament size reduces selection pressure, allowing for more exploration of the search space.
