One of the most basic methods is direct proof. In a direct proof, one starts with a set of axioms or known truths and uses logical deduction to arrive at the statement that needs to be proven. This is a step-by-step process where each step is justified by a previous step or a known rule of inference.

Another common technique is proof by contradiction, also known as indirect proof. This method involves assuming the negation of the statement one wishes to prove and then showing that this assumption leads to a logical inconsistency or a contradiction with established facts. If a contradiction arises, the original assumption must be false, thereby proving the original statement.

Mathematical induction is a powerful technique used to prove statements about all natural numbers. It involves two steps: a base case, where the statement is proven for the smallest natural number (usually zero or one), and an inductive step, where it is shown that if the statement holds for an arbitrary natural number k, it must also hold for k+1.

Proof by contrapositive is closely related to direct proof. Instead of proving a statement of the form "if P, then Q," one proves its contrapositive, "if not Q, then not P." Logically, these two statements are equivalent, meaning if one is true, the other must also be true.
