Tityos

Tityos was a giant in Greek mythology, a son of Gaia, the Earth goddess, and Uranus, the sky god. He was infamous for his immense size and his impious attempt to violate Leto, the mother of Apollo and Artemis.

According to the myth, Tityos pursued Leto through the land of Ionia. Leto, in her desperation, invoked the protection of her divine children. Apollo and Artemis, angered by Tityos's audacity, struck him down with their arrows.

After his death, Tityos was punished in the underworld. He was bound to a section of Tartarus, where his liver was perpetually eaten by a raven or vulture, and regrew each night, only to be consumed again. This eternal torment was a direct consequence of his sacrilegious act against a mother of gods and his defiance of divine law. His punishment served as a stark warning to mortals about the consequences of hubris and disrespect towards the gods. Tityos's story is primarily found in the works of Hesiod and Homer.
