Titraatioihin

Titraatioihin is a Finnish term referring to titrations, a common laboratory method used in analytical chemistry. The primary purpose of a titration is to determine the unknown concentration of a specific substance, known as the analyte, in a sample. This is achieved by reacting the analyte with a solution of precisely known concentration, called the titrant.

The process involves gradually adding the titrant from a burette to the analyte solution until the reaction between them is complete. This completion point is called the equivalence point. To visually or otherwise detect the equivalence point, an indicator is often used. Indicators are substances that change color at or very near the equivalence point, signaling that the reaction has concluded.

There are various types of titrations, each based on different chemical reactions. Common examples include acid-base titrations, where an acid reacts with a base; redox titrations, involving oxidation-reduction reactions; precipitation titrations, forming an insoluble solid; and complexometric titrations, forming a soluble complex. The calculations for determining the analyte concentration are based on the volume of titrant added and the stoichiometry of the reaction. Titrations are fundamental techniques for quantitative analysis in many scientific fields.
