Tithymallos

Tithymallos is a genus of flowering plants in the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. The genus is native to the Mediterranean region, including parts of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Plants in this genus are typically herbaceous perennials or subshrubs.

Species within Tithymallos are characterized by their often succulent leaves and their inflorescences, which are cyathia. A cyathium is a unique inflorescence structure characteristic of the subfamily Euphorbioideae, consisting of a cup-like involucre containing several male flowers reduced to stamens and a single female flower reduced to a pistil. The involucre is often surrounded by petal-like bracts, which can be brightly colored and serve to attract pollinators. The fruits are typically capsules.

The exact taxonomic status of Tithymallos has been subject to revision. Historically, many species now classified in other genera, such as Euphorbia, were included under Tithymallos. Modern molecular phylogenetic studies have helped to clarify relationships within the Euphorbiaceae, leading to reclassifications and sometimes the re-establishment of older genera.

Ecologically, Tithymallos species are often found in arid or semi-arid environments, including rocky slopes, steppes, and sandy soils. They are adapted to conserve water, which is reflected in their often fleshy or leathery leaves. Some species have been used in traditional medicine, though scientific evidence for their efficacy is often limited.
