Tiszántúl

Tiszántúl is a geographical and historical region in eastern Hungary, located east of the Tisza River. Its name literally translates to "beyond the Tisza." The region is predominantly flat, characterized by the Great Hungarian Plain. Administratively, it encompasses several Hungarian counties, including Hajdú-Bihar, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, and parts of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, and Békés counties.

Historically, Tiszántúl has been a significant agricultural area, known for its fertile soil. It has a rich cultural heritage, influenced by various historical periods and peoples. Major cities within the region include Debrecen, the second-largest city in Hungary and a cultural and economic hub, as well as Nyíregyháza and Szolnok. The landscape is dotted with numerous small villages and towns, many of which retain traditional architectural styles and customs.

The economy of Tiszántúl is largely based on agriculture, with crops like wheat, corn, and sunflower being cultivated. Livestock farming is also prevalent. In recent years, there has been a growing focus on tourism, particularly ecotourism and rural tourism, due to the region's natural beauty, including forests, lakes, and the Hortobágy National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its traditional pastoralism. The region also has significant thermal water resources, contributing to its spa tourism sector.
