Tisztítóanyagok, also known as cleaning agents or detergents, are substances or products used to remove dirt, grime, stains, and other unwanted matter from surfaces. They work through various chemical and physical mechanisms to achieve cleanliness.

The primary function of most cleaning agents is to reduce the surface tension of water, allowing it to penetrate and lift dirt more effectively. Surfactants, a common component in many cleaning products, are particularly important for this. They have a hydrophilic (water-attracting) head and a hydrophobic (oil-attracting) tail, enabling them to emulsify grease and oil, suspending them in water so they can be washed away.

Cleaning agents can be broadly categorized based on their alkalinity or acidity. Alkaline cleaners, such as those containing sodium hydroxide or ammonia, are effective at breaking down grease, oils, and proteins. Acidic cleaners, which might include citric acid or vinegar, are good for removing mineral deposits like rust, scale, and hard water stains. Neutral cleaners are generally milder and used for everyday cleaning where strong chemical action is not required.

Beyond surfactants and pH adjusters, cleaning agents often contain other ingredients. Builders enhance the cleaning power of surfactants, particularly in hard water. Enzymes are used to break down specific types of stains, such as proteins, starches, or fats. Solvents help to dissolve oily or greasy soils. Disinfectants and sanitizers are sometimes incorporated to kill microorganisms, further contributing to hygiene.

The choice of cleaning agent depends on the type of dirt, the surface being cleaned, and the desired level of cleanliness. Proper use and safety precautions are essential when handling cleaning agents, as some can be corrosive or irritating.
