Tinglysning

Tinglysning is the official process of registering real property rights and encumbrances in the national land register. The purpose is to provide public notice of who has what rights in a property and to establish the priority and enforceability of those rights. Through tinglysning, ownership titles, mortgages, easements, and other encumbrances are recorded, and certain leases or restrictive covenants can also be registered depending on the jurisdiction.

The registration creates a legally binding record that is enforceable against third parties and typically determines the priority of competing claims—the first entry often has priority, subject to exceptions by law. A deed, agreement, or decision that affects a property's rights must be submitted to the competent land registry authority. The submission includes details of the property, the parties, and the nature of the right, along with any required documents and fees. After registration, the right is added to the official land register and can normally be verified by the public through an extract or title search.

The system supports transparency in real estate transactions and helps prevent disputes by providing reliable information about ownership and encumbrances. The register is generally accessible to the public, and interested parties can obtain extracts of entries. Corrections or cancellations can be made when errors are discovered or by subsequent legal action.
