It is characterized by its simplicity and the use of basic components to illustrate network concepts. In a tikuvõrgust, devices are interconnected in a way that resembles a grid or a mesh, where each node (or "matchstick") has connections to its immediate neighbors. This design is purely illustrative, not a practical or efficient network architecture for real-world applications.

The primary educational purpose of the tikuvõrgust is to demonstrate how data can be transmitted between nodes. It allows for discussions on routing algorithms, packet switching, and potential bottlenecks. Because each node has limited connectivity, data often needs to be forwarded through multiple intermediate nodes to reach its destination.
