Tiheäoksaisuus refers to a phenomenon observed in certain coniferous trees, particularly spruce and fir species, where a dense, compact growth of branches occurs at the top of the tree. This characteristic can manifest as a witches' broom-like formation or a general bushy appearance in the crown. The term itself is Finnish, directly translating to "dense-branchedness."

The causes of tiheäoksaisuus are not fully understood but are thought to be a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors. Some theories suggest that stress from environmental conditions such as harsh weather, nutrient deficiency, or specific pest infestations might trigger this abnormal growth pattern. It can also be a natural, albeit less common, genetic trait in some individuals of a species.

While tiheäoksaisuus does not necessarily indicate disease, it can impact the tree's overall health and commercial value. The dense foliage can reduce light penetration to lower branches, potentially leading to their dieback. In forestry, trees exhibiting significant tiheäoksaisuus might be considered less desirable for timber production due to potential structural issues and reduced wood quality.
